When was the last time you really did a competitor review?

Most B2B business owners and partners can easily name their main three or four competitors. You probably bump into them at industry events, see them on client tender shortlists, or notice their updates on LinkedIn. But there is a big difference between knowing who your competitors are and understanding how they position themselves in the market.

When we talk to professional service practices about competitive positioning, the response is often based on assumption rather than data. Many leaders assume they know what the competition is doing because they offer an identical suite of services. However, without a structured review or a comprehensive digital marketing audit, you may be working with a significant blind spot.

A thorough competitor review is not about copying what others do. It is about understanding the current baseline of your sector so you can figure out how to stand apart from it.

How to do a competitor review?

To get real value from a competitor analysis, you need to evaluate four distinct areas of their marketing activity:

  • Where are they promoting themselves? Are they focusing on organic search optimisation, investing in paid advertising, or building an audience through a targeted email newsletter? Review the competitors activity with tools such as Google Ads Transparency site
  • What are they saying? Look closely at their core messaging, what are they saying and to who?
  • How are they presenting their expertise? Are they writing long-form thought leadership articles, hosting educational webinars, taking out adverts or publishing detailed client case studies?
  • When are they active? Do they ramp up campaigns around specific times of the year, such as the start of the financial year, or ahead of major industry conferences?
  • How much can you learn? Review their websites, LinkedIn and Company House details to get as clear a picture about their business as possible, this insight is always useful.

By asking these questions, you begin to see patterns. You might notice that every competitor is fighting for attention on the exact same platform using identical generic phrases. That is not necessarily a threat, It could be an opportunity for your firm to offer something different.

Why is an annual review important?

Markets do not stand still. Competitors regularly change their commercial focus, launch new service lines, update their branding, and alter their pricing structures. This is why a formal competitor review needs to be an annual fixture in your business planning calendar, rather than a one-off task completed when setting up the firm.

According to established B2B marketing data from Crayon, approximately 57% of growing businesses cite keeping track of competitor strategies as one of their primary market challenges. Despite this, many firms treat competitive research as a temporary luxury rather than a core strategic necessity.

An annual review ensures you do not miss shifting trends within your sector. It allows you to see if a rival has moved into a new niche you should target, or if they have abandoned a service line you could capture. It helps your practice remain proactive rather than reacting to a loss of market share after it has happened. It helps you understand where the market is moving and where your firm can take a stronger position.

Identifying Your Real Differentiation

What makes a corporate client choose your firm over another? The answer is rarely just about price or a standard list of services. In the professional services sector, most established firms can technically deliver the required work. The final decision usually comes down to how you deliver it and what your business represents.

If you do not clearly understand your own differentiation, your target audience will not understand it either. Once you have analysed your competitors, you can look back at your own practice with greater objectivity:

  • Review your core values: Are your firm’s values visible across your marketing, or are they buried on an obscure page? If your main differentiator is your client retention rate, that message should lead your communications.
  • Audit your current messaging: Look objectively at your homepage. If you replaced your logo with a competitor’s branding, would the copy still make sense? If yes, your messaging is simply too generic.
  • Highlight what you do best: Put your primary commercial strengths front and centre. If your team has deep expertise in a niche sector, make sure your content reflects that specific knowledge.

Our brand values and professional perspective should shape every piece of content and campaign you create.

Strategy Guides the Process

A competitor review is only useful if it leads to strategic action. It is easy to look at a rival’s sleek website or high volume of social media posts and feel an immediate pressure to replicate them. This is a common mistake we see frequently across the industry.

Just because a competitor is highly active on a specific platform does not mean they are getting actual commercial results. They could be spending time and budget on activities that are not delivering meaningful results. Activity does not automatically equal effectiveness. Your marketing must always be driven by your own commercial goals, not by a reactive desire to match someone else’s daily output.

The goal of reviewing your competitors is to gain clarity. It gives you the evidence you need to refine your position, strengthen your core messages, and communicate your value with total confidence.

Are you completely certain you know how your firm compares to the rest of the market, or are you relying on old assumptions?
